The roof is one of the barriers in a house. It is important that the roof is chosen carefully. Choosing a cheap and poor quality roofing system is highly discouraged. It is best to invest in a good roof that could last for decades. Here are some details from a roofer about the roof’s lifespan.

How Long a Roof Should Normally Last?

Generally, the roof shingles should last for up to 30 years. Most manufacturers provide a 10 to 30 year warranty. However, the warranty does not include damaged roofs due to typhoon, hail storm, tornado, fire and other calamities. A roof that does not experience harsh weather could last for three decades.

How Bad Weather Can Shorten a Roof’s Lifespan?

A good quality roof can last for decades but bad weather can shorten its lifespan. A roof that should last for 20 to 30 years may need to be replaced after only 15 years if it usually deals with bad weather.

Bad weather can definitely shorten a roof’s lifespan to a great extent. For example, hail can remove the granulation and expose the asphalt. When this happens, the asphalt shingles become vulnerable to damages. Plus, it weakens the roof and makes it lighter than it used to be. Many homeowners would think that there is no roofing damage after a hail storm if there are no dents but the effects can be noticed when the roof starts to leak.

High temperatures can also shorten a roof’s lifespan. Heat can cause cracks on the roof. It may also damage the sealants that can lead to leak problems.

Too strong winds may also require you to replace your roof sooner than expected. Winds that exceed 50 miles per hour in speed can create a vacuum. The air pushes the roof from upward and causes the fasteners to loosen up. The result is a weaker roof that may be vulnerable even to moderate wind.

Bad weather may also cause moisture buildup. Moisture can significantly shorten the life of your roof whether it is made from asphalt shingles or metal.

What to Do with Your Roof?

If the roof is damaged and the warranty is still in effect then you should not have a problem. However, keep in mind that the warranty while it does cover bad weather will have a time period for filing a claim for damages caused by bad weather. Your option is to file a claim with your home insurance company and look for a reputable roofing contractor.
