An Old Town With A Progressive Attitude
History of the Lebanon area dates back to prehistoric Indians. In 1819 Lebanon was incorporated and was known for its commerce and education. In 1842 the Cumberland University opened and was used by General George Patton during WWII. As the Confederate and Union soldiers tried to advance their causes, many battles happened in Lebanon. There are over 100 Confederate soldiers buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Lebanon. Visitors can learn about the people who gave their lives to protect Lebanon and the nation.
From 1902 to the 1980s, the Castle Heights Military Academy was a prestigious training facility. Now one of the original buildings is used by the City of Lebanon.
Lebanon’s Town Square is the location of shops, restaurants and other businesses against a backdrop and architectural façades reminiscent of Lebanon’s history.
James E. Ward Agricultural Center/Wilson County Fairgrounds hosts the State Fair, numerous attractions, competitions, concerts and other live entertainment throughout the year.
The Jimmy Floyd Family Center is a place for youth, families and senior citizens to enjoy. Activities and amenities in the park include a 60-foot wading pool, playground, volleyball courts, track, skateboarding, bicycle grills, pavilions picnic area and plenty of places to people watch.
The City of Lebanon Museum and History Center enables visitors to learn more about the past. The Museum honors the ancestors of today’s residents, historical documents and exhibits.
The 900 acres of Cedars of Lebanon State Park was named for the abundance of red cedar trees found in the area. There are cabins, campgrounds, pavilions, hiking trails and nature to observe. Throughout the park you can horseback ride along the trails with rented horses or your own private horse.
